In July 2012, the Council was successful in its application to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for funding to improve Rouken Glen Park. The £2.15million from HLF and £1million from ERC will be invested into the park over the next few years. Works began on site at the beginning of 2013, and will continue until Spring 2016.
The pavilion itself was originally opened in 1910. It is a valuable facility for the visitors of Rouken Glen Park providing an information centre and a place to meet and speak to the park rangers. The pavilion also hosts exhibitions and training workshops and meetings.
The pavilion building, being over 100 year old, was in need of refurbishment and modernisation, with the new works needing to maintain the historic character of the building, yet include new roof coverings, new windows and shutters, ramps for access and new WC facilities, as well as work below ground to the drainage and foundations.
A new roof covering was needed that would maintain the aesthetics of the existing concrete tiles, but also protect the investment from the lottery funding by minimising maintenance and future costs over the life of the roof. As the pavilion would be empty at night the new covering would need to be robust and help protect against vandalism.
The solution was the Decra® Classic lightweight roof tile. Decra® Classic tiles give the appearance of traditional concrete or clay yet weighing just one seventh of their traditional counterparts, Decra® Classic represents a lightweight, easy to install and robust alternative.
Decra is the only UK roofing manufacturer to win Secured by Design accreditation from the Association of Chief Police Officers for the Decra® system, which features enhanced security fittings and a specialised installation method.
The durability of the tiles and the strength of the fixing means the system is maintenance free and so delivers a low whole life cost – it is largely unlikely that individual tiles will need to be replaced at a later date - and is guaranteed for 40 years and so offers complete peace of mind for the Council.
